Day and night Jay Gatsby's mansion on West Egg buzzes with bright young things drinking, dancing and debating his mysterious character。 For Gatsby - young, handsome, fabulously rich - always seems alone in the crowd, watching and waiting, although no one knows what for。 Beneath the shimmering surface of his life he is hiding a secret longing that can never be fulfilled。

In The Great Gatsby, Fitzgerald brilliantly captures both the disillusionment of post-war America and the moral failure of a society obsessed with wealth and status。 But he does more than render the essence of a particular time and place, for in chronicling Gatsby's tragic pursuit of his dream, Fitzgerald re-creates the universal conflict between illusion and reality。

I read this book when I was younger and did not like it。 So I decided to reread it now that I'm older and I still did not really like it。 They say it's a classic, but。。。meh。 I read this book when I was younger and did not like it。 So I decided to reread it now that I'm older and I still did not really like it。 They say it's a classic, but。。。meh。 。。。more

The beef half way through the book was immaculate plus I really enjoy the way Fitzgerald writes his books。 However, I couldn’t stop seeing Gatsby as Leonardo DiCaprio in my head so that was fun!

What fun! I had never read this classic, and so many references call it the great American novel (up there with Moby Dick, which couldn’t be more different in length, characters, and style), that I had to get to it。 And, it’s a short book, so it was a perfect choice after The Underground Railroad。Fitzgerald’s prose sucked me along, his characters made sense after the briefest of introductions, and the story had enough twists, turns and complications for a novel twice its length。 I enjoyed it tho What fun! I don’t know how I ever got to age 38 without reading this but I really enjoyed it。 It wasn’t what I was expecting because I went into it not knowing much of the plot line。 Short, enjoyable classic!

Such a dazzling depth! The Great Gatsby, a。k。a。 The Bae Across The BayI finished the book, watched the movie, and now I feel this strange and extreme need to sit in a corner and contemplate every aspect of the story so much that I end up having written an essay or two (or a dozen!) on it。to be updated 。。。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 For me it was hard to love any of the characters, a lot were unlikeable for me。 Gatsby with his thoughtless provoking of Tom, Daisy in her careless flirtations。 Nick with his naivity。But I enjoyed the story it weaved, the language brought me back in time。I wish there could have been justice for Gatsby and for him to have more true friends in the end。 A harsh reminder that your house can be full of guests but that doesn't mean they are your friends。 For me it was hard to love any of the characters, a lot were unlikeable for me。 Gatsby with his thoughtless provoking of Tom, Daisy in her careless flirtations。 Nick with his naivity。But I enjoyed the story it weaved, the language brought me back in time。I wish there could have been justice for Gatsby and for him to have more true friends in the end。 A harsh reminder that your house can be full of guests but that doesn't mean they are your friends。 。。。more

One of the greatest American novels ever written。 A heart-felt story about hunger, whether it is for money, power or love, that depicts a clear picture of American society in a specific context and time, and the cruelty that it holds for those who fall under its spell。

This novel has spoken words to me since the day I read it。 My dad had me ready TGG over the summer a few years back and I remember initially dreading my "assignment"。 What was the purpose of reading another couple hundred pages of stuffy classic American literature? I was expecting nothing more than a long winded story of love and hatred and the human condition filled to bursting with words I didn't understand and couldn't be bothered to learn。 What I was instead met with was what may in fact be my favorite story。 Of all time。 Big words there。 I fell in love with F。 Scott Fitzgerald's work through this book, with the era, with images of flapper girls and men in dapper dress。 While you may call this a highly romanticized view of the period (which of course it is), there is still something so alluring about the way Fitzgerald captures the time that I often take it in as fact。 Gatsby and Daisy are two of my favorite characters (again, EVER) for nothing more simple than their innate humanness。 The biographical aspects of some of Fitzgerald's other works are also evidenced throughout TGG, which in turn led me to the rest of his novels。 While it may be a story of love and hatred and the human condition, Fitzgerald did it so well and so beautifully, I would recommend this book to anyone and everyone in a heartbeat。 Literally。 Go read it right now。 。。。more

I decided to go back to my high school days and reread this classic。 I remember loving it so much。 I still enjoyed it but don’t know what about it I was such a fan of as a kid。

One of those books that one cannot forgot for sometime。 I fell in love with Gatsby’s tale and Nick’s hesitant voice。 The characters were deeply involved within a moral dilemma as their presence within the gray area heightened my interest。 So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the pastI am reading this for college and I have fallen in love。 While reading, the movie was playing in the background。 The characters were not attuned to each other and sometimes the demar One of those books that one cannot forgot for sometime。 I fell in love with Gatsby’s tale and Nick’s hesitant voice。 The characters were deeply involved within a moral dilemma as their presence within the gray area heightened my interest。 So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the pastI am reading this for college and I have fallen in love。 While reading, the movie was playing in the background。 The characters were not attuned to each other and sometimes the demarcation felt really huge。 I was not aware of the political connotations this story held within its lines, extremely eye-opening。 However, F。 Scott Fitzgerald constructed an attractive tale that one cannot help but get sucked in the glamour that of which belongs to the great Gastby。 。。。more

This was a super quick read。 For the most part this book kept me engaged in the plot。 However, I don’t like that affairs are praised and taken light heartedly。 The last chapter was slow and the ending was shocking。 This is more of a ‘feel good/story’ based book rather than a book where you will learn something from it。

I don't know what I was expecting with this book, but it turned out to be a surprisingly well-told story。 I had never watched the movie, so I went into the book completely blind。 The first few chapters, the introduction to the story, and the characters were a little hard to enjoy just because I was so bored, but when the action started to pick up, it became much more interesting。 I really liked the way that Nick as the narrator would tell the story, and then tell a little bit of history behind a I don't know what I was expecting with this book, but it turned out to be a surprisingly well-told story。 I had never watched the movie, so I went into the book completely blind。 The first few chapters, the introduction to the story, and the characters were a little hard to enjoy just because I was so bored, but when the action started to pick up, it became much more interesting。 I really liked the way that Nick as the narrator would tell the story, and then tell a little bit of history behind a character or an event that he had learned, as it made the storytelling more authentic with those little breaks。 This book had a great message of the consequences associated with the American dream and luxury, love, and the past, and it was a good start to my foray into Classics。 I'm just surprised that it took me 3 days to read 180 pages :) 。。。more

What an amazing, awful book

Remi Majersdorf

Fitzgerald toont zich een meester van compact vertelwerk in deze Amerikaanse tragedie over de rise and fall van een flamboyante kasteelheer。

Erin

It was alright。 I liked the deeper meaning at the end, but the middle was a little draggy。 But it’s quite a short book so it’s not detrimental。 Quite an easy read so a good place to start if you’re looking to get into classics。 I don’t have much else to say really。

Ashleigh

Does a book such as this even need a review? My only criticism is I wish F。Scott Fitzgerald gave his wife the recognition she deserved in this peice of work。

Lauren

Even as a freshman in high school, I recognized that this shit was definitely fruity。 5/5。

I must be missing something。 Just how does a book become a “classic”。 I read this because it was mentioned several times in “Norwegian Wood” (excellent book)。 And, I’m sure it was assigned in high school。 I just don’t see what all the fuss is about。 It totally didn’t do it for me。

For the first 6 1/2 chapters, I genuinely didn't understand the praise of the book。 It just didn't resonate。 But then THAT scene happened and things shifted for me。 I don't know if it simply felt more real or felt more like something I enjoyed, but from that point the book intrigued me more than it ever had since I'd opened it。 I read the other 1/2 of chapter 7 as well as chapters 8 and 9 in one final sitting。 It was tremendous, I must say。 I was ready to give this book a single star and my opin For the first 6 1/2 chapters, I genuinely didn't understand the praise of the book。 It just didn't resonate。 But then THAT scene happened and things shifted for me。 I don't know if it simply felt more real or felt more like something I enjoyed, but from that point the book intrigued me more than it ever had since I'd opened it。 I read the other 1/2 of chapter 7 as well as chapters 8 and 9 in one final sitting。 It was tremendous, I must say。 I was ready to give this book a single star and my opinion did an almost 180 spin。 I can't say I still FULLY understand the praise, but I can say I do appreciate the book more than I thought I would。 Thank you, F。 Scott Fitzgerald, old sport。 。。。more
